All Electric Bike Error Codes! The Full List With Causes And Solutions!
Suddenly the support of the motor has disappeared, you break out in a sweat and a mysterious error code flashes alarmingly on the display of your bicycle.
What does your E-MTB want to tell you and what do you need to do to keep riding? Anyone who regularly checks the Internet knows it: “Error 404 – Page not found”.
Also, electric mountain bikes and trekking bikes have error codes that are displayed when something in the system is not functioning properly. Errors can occur, for example, if a sensor is not set correctly, if a signal is interrupted or if there is something wrong with the software.
Before we dive deeper into the error codes of the individual systems, here are some general tips to help resolve the most common problems:
-Turn off the bike completely for about 10 seconds, just like with PCs, rebooting can work wonders.
-Check the battery, is it correctly installed and sufficiently charged?
-Are all contacts intact? Check that the display is properly paired and check the connection points that are easily accessible.
-Is the spoke magnet properly adjusted or have you lost it? If the magnet is missing, the motor will not be able to determine the speed correctly and will go into emergency mode or stop providing support altogether.
If the above tips didn’t work, it may help to review the error code and check what it means. Listed below are the most common error codes and their solutions.

Shimano Steps E-bike error codes
The Shimano STEPS E8000 is the most used motor on the market after the Bosch Performance CX, below we list the 3 most common Error Messages:
Error | Cause | Restriction of operation when an error is displayed | Remedy |
W013 | The torque sensor may not be fully initialized. | The support may be less than usual, or it may fail completely. | Remove the feet from the pedals, press the battery switch and restart the system. Important: Do not apply pressure to the pedals while switching them on and off. |
W011 | The vehicle speed is not detected. | The maximum speed at which support is provided may be less than normal. | Check that the speed sensor is installed correctly and that the spoke magnet is in the correct position. The distance from the speed sensor (note the markings) on the rear fork to the spoke magnet should be between 3 and 17 mm. |
W010 | The motor temperature is higher than during normal operation. | Support may be less than usual. | Take a break and wait for the engine temperature to drop. The support function should not be used until then. |
Yamaha E-bike Error Codes
The Japanese manufacturer Yamaha is considered a pioneer of e-bike engines and has been producing them en masse since 1993. Giant has been building its eMTBs with Yamaha engines since 2013. In addition to Bosch motors, Haibike has been relying on Yamaha systems since 2014. Yamaha’s situation is similar to Brose’s because bike manufacturers can equip their eMTB with their own screen, battery, etc. Because the bike manufacturer doesn’t have to use the complete Yamaha system, there are no uniform error codes for eMTBs with Yamaha engines. However, there are some common error codes that we list below:
Error code | Cause | Solution |
SPD SNSR/ CHK MAGNET | The spoke magnet on the rear wheel is twisted. | As described on the display, the position of the spoke magnet must be checked. If this is OK, the dealer should check the wiring and connector. |
31/32 | The cable connection torque sensor and controller are defective. / Cable defective between coil and printed circuit board (loose contact, cable disconnected). | If the system does not detect any errors, it can return to normal operation after a reboot. Otherwise, the torque sensor or controller must be replaced. |
33–37 | Abnormal standby voltage or abnormal voltage during operation. | If the system does not detect any errors, it can return to normal operation after a reboot. (If the system detects the same error multiple times, it cannot return to normal operation even after it is reset.)1. Set the reference voltage of the torque sensor.2. Replace the torque sensor.3. Replace the controller. |
38 | The torque sensor or pedal crank sensor is defective. | Replace the torque sensor, controller, or drive shaft. |
39 | Short circuit or crank sensor defective. | Replace the controller or drive shaft. |
Conclusion
A large number of error messages are easy to solve yourself. These are often caused by loose plugs and connectors between the drive unit, battery, display, or controller. For more complex error messages, we recommend making an appointment with an authorized bicycle repairer.
