Detailed review of The Unagi Model One

To kick start this review of the Best electric scooter for commuting in 2020 we start off with the Unagi Model One.

This electric scooter started his life through a Kickstarter campaign and it quickly became a favorite thanks to its build features and its innovative design.

It features a very unique one-click folding mechanism making it super easy to fold up and carry. It weighs only 24 Ibs (11kg) which makes it light enough to carry it with you.

The handlebars are made from Magnesium and feature an integrated LED Display that displays all the necessary specs. The stem is made from the same ultra-strong lightweight Carbon fiber used in tesla’s Space X rocket, while the base is made from a single piece of aluminum.

There are 2 versions available: a single 250W motor or a dual 450W motor version. There are 4 colors available. The single motor version is plenty powerful and you should only go for the dual-motor version if you have a lot of hills on your commute or where you live because you will go uphill a bit easier with the dual-motor version.

The tires are airless cut-out tires that are puncture-proof (a big plus if you are familiar with the difficult process of changing tires on electric scooters). They are made from special rubber and act as a suspension setup.

It also features 2 ways of braking:

  1. Regenerative braking uses the engine to slow you down. The left lever on the steering wheel is used to stop, and unlike any other electric scooter with regenerative braking, in this case, the harder you push the lever, the harder and faster you stop.
  2. And a regular foot brake on the rear wheel.

It features front and rear LED lights and a real horn instead of a bell.

The top speed is 15.5MPH (25KM/H) and a range of 15.5 miles (25km) and the battery is fully charged after 4 to 5 hours.

It supports a rider weighing up to 200Ibs (90kg) for the 250W version and 220Ibs (100kg) for the 450W dual-motor version.

SPECS:

  • Top speed: 15.5 mph – 25 km/h)
  • Weight 24 lbs – 11 kg
  • Max rider weight: 220 lbs – 100 kgs
  • Brakes: Dual electronic + Rear foot brake
  • Tire: Dual 7.5″ Cut-out
  • Motor: Single 250W – Dual 450W (200 W front, 250 W rear)

Pros

At just 22.5 lbs (thansk to it’s carbon chassis) this scooter is very portable and with a battery pack that can go up to 15.5 miles you can get anywhere you need to be. This makes this electric scooter one of the best for commuting and general trips.

cons

The motor is 250w which is powerful but there are more powerful models on the market.
