Fully parked sidewalks also caused necessary problems. That is why the city council, together with the scooter rental companies tightened the rules in Berlin:

  • No parking at the Holocaust memorial
  • No parking at Pariser Platz (near the Brandenburg Gate)
  • Drinking alcohol and driving around is prohibited (above 21 maximum 0, 05%)
  • A maximum of 20 km/h on an electric scooter
  • Only driving on the road or on bicycle paths
  • Driver must be at least 14 years old
  • Two people on an electric scooter (duo riders) are prohibited
  • Fines for violations such as driving through a red light or calling

On their website you can indicate exactly when you want to rent an electric scooter and for how long. In addition, you can choose between electric scooters that 20 or 45 km/h and with or without a saddle. You can rent such a device through this rental service for about 10 euros per hour. Note: for this price you have to rent a minimum of 2 hours.

Lime, Tier, Voi, Circ, and Bird are the most used apps in Berlin. Lime is one of the most popular variants and costs 20 cents per minute and 1 euro to start up. A comparable and cheaper alternative is Tier where you pay only 15 cents per minute and 1 euro for unlocking.

Most have a special ‘Wallet’ on which you can put money with a debit or credit card. Some, including Lime, have an “auto-reload feature” that automatically deducts the amount from your card. But how do these apps work? Very simple, go through the following steps:

  • Download the shared scooter app and register as a user
  • View the map for the nearest shared scooter
  • Scan the QR code and start cruising
  • At the end, you can click ‘End ride
  • You can leave the scooter within the indicated zones

When scanning the QR code, an error message may appear such as: ‘under maintenance‘ which means that the scooter is already in use, or because the scooter is out of order due to technical circumstances.
